Once the doll is assembled it is ready for costuming. Dolls from the same mold will look different when finished it is often difficult to identify them as the same basic doll. Some clothing is made to be removed, while others are designed as applied and not meant to be removed. Since this type of art doll is not meant to be "played with," the removal of the clothing is not a requirement.
Costuming is an art in itself, and will vary among doll makers. Many simply buy the clothes, while others make the costuming the focus of their art. In any event the completed doll takes on a personality of its own, and doll makers often feel like Pinocchio's father. Many doll makers are found talking to their dolls. My grandsons kissed the dolls, as soon as they could walk up to them. All the work that goes into them seems to radiate from them.
Most of the dolls in our collection are a presentation of the costume. Please see our section on Custom Design and Display. The doll is a means to display heirloom and special fabrics, jewelry and fine beads. Stephanie, is costumed entirely in molded silk and Sworovski crystal beads and semi precious stones. Most of the wigs are purchased for the dolls, and come in a variety of colors. The wig can be combed and restyled once on the doll.
You cannot make a doll in a day since you must wait for the greenware to dry, the kiln to cool, not only for the high fire, but all the subsequent china painting firings. Each step takes considerable time. Most doll makers will pour for a day, clean for a day etc., doing several different dolls at once. Costuming can take the most time, and will vary depending on the complexity of the design. Stephanie "The Bride" a very intricate and detailed bridal gown, took 26 days to complete.
