Once the firing process is complete, the porcelain piece is ready to paint. Faces are the most complex since they require several lower heat firings of about 1400 degrees for each stage of painting. Eyebrows and eyelashes require special skill and are painstakingly applied. Painted eyes require additional skill and often require up to 5 or 6 firings between coats. For example, the primary eye color may be shaded twice before the iris is even added to the eye. Shading around the eyes and nose is done in several coats as is the rouge and lip color. Even when a doll has a faint color it develops depth and a "glow" with multiple coats to become a finished doll. When the face is completed it can be warmed and rubbed with wax paper for an added sheen. The legs, arms and chest plate are blushed with rouge color. Most dolls have glass eyes, which are more easily applied using plaster inside the head. When glass eyes are used, the eyeholes are made and cleaned before the high fire. Glass eyes require no painting.
